That's the function of all these things.  They serve to: 
  • Organize learning to fit learning objectives,
  • Lay out the path to mastery of important tasks 
  • Measure progress as it occurs,
  • Focus on capability rather than study,
  • Provide guidelines and feedback for self-directed study,
  • Motivate the learner,
  • Show learners what they need to achieve,
  • Recognize and document achievements.
