2016 PROMO: HG: Virtual worlds welcome on the web. Bypass the grid entry. HGProjects proposal.

Virtual worlds welcome on the web
Bypass the grid entry. HGProjects proposal.
Update 5/24/2016
You are inviting new people into a virtual world.  You want to bring them into a place that will make them want to come back.   To do that you market to people about what they want, then get those that show interest to a place where they can start doing what they want, as fast as you can.  Here is my proposal.

Welcome to the world of Virtual Worlds (web site)

  • "Get immersed in virtual reality!"
  • Show why they want to go there:
  • "Find worlds that fit your interests!"
  • Show blurbs about popular interests
  • Blurbs have links to interest communities.
  • Interest communities exist as G+ communities and as inworld places.
  • "How to get there" and "What to do there" are intro sections.
  • General parts of intro sections are prepared by HGProjects.
  • Specialized parts of intro sections a prepared by relevant community.
  • "How to get there" has instructions on getting to a place run by that community.
  • This is my straw-man model.  Of course it needs fixing.
  • So tell us how to fix it--tell us in comments on this article

        The proposal

Why do people come virtual worlds?

        • Meet and work with people with interests like theirs.
        • Build and run model railroads
        • Build and sail model sailboats
        • Build and fly model aircraft
        • Develop skills in a language they want to learn.
        • Perform, watch, dance to music
        • Perform, write, watch, videograph, or stage fiction.
        • Produce and present educational materials.
        • Participate in a class
        • Maybe a few even want to be Vampires.
        • More themes (TBD)

What do newcomers need to know?

        • It mostly depends on what they want to do.
        • So guide them fast to a theme-oriented instruction path.
        • That path should be prepared by people working on that theme.
        • Educators to educators.  Singers to singers.  Vampires to vampires.
        • That path might even be run by the theme community.
        • Sure, there are other things people need to know to enjoy Virtual Worlds.
        • But they don't need to know everything at once.
        • What makes a learning curve steep is trying to load everything at once.
        • I will propose a basic set of skills for virtual worlds in a later article.

        Web resources for virtual worlds

        Implementation

        • It does not need to be a single website.
        • It could be made of community-oriented websites.
        • Beginner help pages can easily be duplicated on many websites
        • Any content I produce is licensed for any use, attribution only.
        • Anyone can use my material as they wish.  Just give a link to the source.
        • So there might be a sailing website and multiple education web sites.
        • Web sites could mix their own material with standard beginner material.
        • They would give a grid link and login instructions for that grid.
        • But the login instructions would take people to the community entry point.
        • The community would manage the beginner experience.
        • A large community might have people near the arrival point a lot of the time.
        • Bringing new people into virtual worlds? Bring them in via Cookie II or use the NMA method on your own site
