2016 WRITE: PEOPLE: If you want people to talk about your blog, don't lock them out

If you want people to talk about your blog,
don't lock them out
Do you want comments on your blog posts? Do you want people to send your post to Facebook, Goggle or other social media?  Then be sure it is easy for them to do what you want them to do.
I follow lots of blogs.   Often I want to mark a Like, send one to my Google stream, or make a comment .  Sometimes I can.  Too often I find no way to do that easily or at all.  If you are not offering your readers an easy way to comment on your blog and an easy way to pass on your article to others, you are missing a valuable way to promote your work.

I also write a blog. So I have to deal with these matters from both sides.   After the break I will offer some suggestions.

        Comments on and open

A good blog-posting service will provide for you to accept comments on your blog and will have settings for you to manage the comments.  Each comment is going to require some action from you.
        • Does it call for a response?
        • Does it add information that you want to add to the original blog?
        • Does it suggest content for a new blog?
        • Do you want to leave it in your blog?
        • Is it spam that you want to reject?

How do you keep out lots of spam?

        • The more readers you get, the more spam you will get.
        • You can require capcha,
        • But lots of people will not bother with capcha to post a comment
        • You can hold off publishing for your approval, but that may discourage comments.
        • I use a middle ground (in Blogger):  no capcha ever.
        • No delay for recent posts.  I see them and delete them if they are spam.
        • Older posts are delayed for my approval.

        Google+ as another comment route

        • I use G+ to point out items I think some of my readers may want to read.
        • That puts the item on my Google  stream.
        • Other people can see them.
        • I can find them on my stream in case I want to use them in my blog.
