2016 OSHG: Viewer in Browser (VIB): Imaginary use case: communities

Viewer in Browser, Imaginary use case: communities
OpenSim does not have a viewer in the browser (VIB) yet, but people are working on that.  2 demos show that it is possible with worlds that function like a limited version of OpenSim.  Assuming it can be done, what would we do with it?  Here is a bit of speculation about how communities might use it to foster their growth.

Demos

Community use (early)

  • Community webpage markets community
  • Community webpage offers entry.
  • Web page offers avatar choices fitting the community.
  • Viewer in browser (VIB) entry is to main community world.
  • Community has activities there as much as possible.
  • Or has walkin TPs to other places.
  • Web page gives complete instructions on what to do after entry.

Metaverse events, current and upcoming

  • "Be a vampire"  is not going to attract people to your educational world.
  • Your website about your educational world can attract people better suited.
  • Suppose the VIB entry on your website can bring them right into your world.
  • Your website can offer them just the instructions they need to function in your world.
  • You can offer them just the starter avatars suited to your community.
  • You can bring them into a place set up to show them what you have to offer.
  • A place often populated by people in your community.
  • Nobody can tell about your community like the people already in it.
  • Nobody can welcome to your community like the people already in it.

What's on the webpage?

  • Pictures and videos of:
  • "What we do in our world."
  • Instructions on "How to get started in our world."
  • "How to walk around."
  • "How to walk Into a transporter door"
  • "How to join our inworld group"
  • "How to contact one of us inworld."
  • Resources for beginners:
  • Theme appropriate avatars.
  • Inworld phone line (offered if someone is available).
  • Google event calendar for the community.
  • Look ahead:
  • "Things you can do once you get to know our virtual world."

        Limited capabilities?

        • The first VIB may not have good (or any) support for content creation.
        • So content creation will need one of the current viewers, like Firestorm.
        • You won't have a lasting inventory or friends list unless you register.
        • So the VIB is a freemium plan.
        • Come in with no commitment (no registration).
        • If you get to like it, want to do more, register and get inventory and friends list.
        • If you like it a lot, you can rent you a plot.
