2016 OSHG: Virtual world on a browser. Demo now. Coming in Halcyon

Virtual world on a browser
Demo now.  Coming in Halcyon
Here is a sample of what the virtual world will be like when we have a viewer in a browser. And some ways things might change with that capability.
Screen capture from Chrome browser

Demo

  • Try a browser-based virtual world*
  • Go there, select an avatar, give  a name, and enter the world.
  • Use keystrokes to move your avatar W,A,S,D, or arrow keys
  • Walk around -- there are some info signs
  • Type C to open chat, Esc to close it.
  • Marcus Milne (the brains behind this) may drop in and chat with you.
  • But to try chat, bring a friend.  No voice, but you can use Skype.
  • Not much to see here, but imagine that it led to your place.
  • Or to the place run by your community.
  • *This is sometimes off line--If you find that, try again the next day.
  • If you register, you can do a little building in this world.

For Newcomers (what we tell them)

  • Come into our virtual world.
  • Look around, chat (text or voice) with some on the natives.
  • Check out a community doing something you are interested in.
  • Ask where you can find out about events.
  • Come to a dance, show, play-reading, class, or meeting.
  • If you want to change your avatar or build things you will need to load a viewer.

For Oldtimers

  • Your virtual world is in a big computer.
  • You couldn't take it anywhere to show your friends.
  • Until now.  But now you can run it on your laptop.
  • You can connect that to a big screen TV.
  • You can show people the place you built in your virtual world.
  • Give them a ride on your train.
  • Get back at them for all those pictures they showed you of their trip to Italy.
  • Or take your world to your classroom
  • Or visit your virtual world on your commute
  • The people at your party can even chat with your friends in the virtual world.
  • Maybe you can even get some friends to come in and visit you.
  • After all, everybody has a browser.
  • -
  • Sure, you have to start up your main viewer to build.
  • But for common social activities, your friends are as near as you browser.

Easily available in a browser (already in use for other purposes)

  • Typed local chat
  • Voice local chat
  • Music stream
  • Teleport
  • Friends list, instant messages
  • Groups, group messages

Lesser versions of the hypergrid with browser enty

  • *You can visit any grid that does not ask for credentials.
  • *You can visit any grid that accepts credentials you already have (G+, Facebook).
  • **You could bring your own avatar if stored by a 3rd party like Punkoffice.
  • **You could bring objects with the technology of Kitely market.
  • *Value-added services that grids might offer.
